Church of Saint Giovenale
The Church of San Giovenale is roughly 80 metres from the restaurant Al San Giovenale that bears the same name. Built around 1004, according to the 16th century historian Manente, this was probably the earliest cathedral of the city of Orvieto and certainly qualifies as its oldest church.

The construction date does not however exclude that there may have been a church on this site beforehand.
A number of historians have suggested that this church was built over the remains of an Etruscan temple dedicated to Jove, which in turn may have been superseded by a paleo-Christian church dedicated to St Savino, as testified by traces of a fresco by Ugolino d’Ilario in the Corporale Chapel of the Duomo.
In the Romanesque style, the interior of the Church of San Giovenale contains a number of well preserved Medieval frescoes.
La Chiesa di San Giovenale è in stile romanico, l’interno contiene molte pitture di epoca medievale, ben conservate.
The main altar is entirely in marble and a fine example of Byzantine sculpture.
Today the church is a favourite venue for wedding ceremonies.
